A History of Sheriffs & the Modern Uniform
In the United States of America the role of a sheriff varies dramatically between different states and counties. The sheriff is usually a county official, the enforcer of the county court. In urban areas, some sheriffs may be restricted to these court duties, such as overseeing the county jail, courtroom security, detainee transport, serving warrants, service of process or police administration. Sheriffs may also patrol outside of city/town limits or jurisdiction. In many rural areas, sheriffs and their deputies are the principal form of police. It has become increasingly important to be able to differentiate between typical Police Officers and the Sheriffs office. The iconic sheriff’s uniform does that very job as it is normally markedly different than the traditional police uniform.

As opposed to the traditional dark blue uniform of most police agencies, Sheriffs and Deputies often wear a 2-tone uniform combination of either lighter khaki on top and darker brown on the botom or the reverse. The shirts are a button-down uniform shirt, either short sleeved or long sleeved and often have a shoulder patch reading “SHERIFF” across the top in some manner. The pants usually have a stripe affixed to the outside seams. Sheriff’s uniforms also usually include normal uniform accessories like a gold colored, seven-point metal badge and a gold nameplate.
The reason for the mixed light / dark combination of the sheriff uniforms have a lot to do with the psychology of color. As Richard R. Johnson, M.S. talks about in his report “The Psychological Influence of the Police Uniform”, there was an experiment that presented test subjects with 2 types of paramilitary uniforms. One was the traditional dark blue worn by most police agencies and the other was a khaki shirt and dark green pants traditionally worn by California sheriff deputies. Although both uniforms ranked similarly as good, honest, helpful, and competent, the lighter colored sheriff uniform rated noticeably higher for warmth and friendliness. What they gathered from these results was that a uniform which is only half dark sends a better message that the all blue/black uniform.
Sheriffs have served and protected the English-speaking peoples for a thousand years and over those many years, the uniforms have changed and are universally as unique as the individual Sheriff’s around the country. While some sheriff uniforms follow this traditional brown / tan combination of colors, others use other combinations of browns and greens or all greens or grays.
Whatever the color of their uniform, a sheriff is generally, but not always, the highest law enforcement officer of a county. As Thomas Jefferson wrote in his THE VALUE OF CONSTITUTIONS, “the Office of Sheriff is the most important of all the executive offices of the county.” The office of Sheriff is certainly significant, and was in fact the first county office established in the United States. Some very outstanding Americans have held the office of County Sheriff, from the earliest days down to our present era.

The man behind the inspiration.
Raj Tamang has been leading treks/tours and adventure holidays since 1988.He specializes in treks through out Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and India.He has been involved in local charities for many years and has a great love and passion for his country and his job.In 2003 he became the liaison officer for the Royal Marines expedition of Everest in Tibet and even coordinated a wedding for an officer at base camp.He has lead many high altitude training camps for expedition groups wanting to go that extra mile and loves leading small trekking groups on holiday.He has great respect for the world around him and loves sharing his knowledge and amusing experiences with others.
Raj Tamang was born in Singapore to Nepalese parents. He spent his childhood and was educated there till 1988. His father was with the Singapore Police Gurkhas and upon his retirement in 1988, the family returned to their native land: Nepal. With learning from his family background and the education he received, the return home was an opportunity to put into place his aspirations: to be with his people.
In eighteen years he has built on valuable working experience. From Tour Consultant for World Travels (Nepal), to trek leader for World Expeditions an Australian Company. He has also traveled extensively in Singapore, Malaysia,Thailand, Tibet, India, Bhutan, Australia, UnitedKingdom, Ireland, Switzerland, France and Spain. He is multilingual and speaks fluent Nepali, English, Hindi, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, Hokkien (a Chinese Dialect) and Thai. He is also capable of getting by with several other languages.
In 1991 he joined International Trekkers (Nepal) as a sirdar. This was one of his most valuable experiences. For the next 5 years he trekked all over the Himalayan regions of Nepal, India, Tibet and Bhutan learning about his region and coming back to his roots. He learnt how to run treks from small to large teams and prepare for the future.
In 1996 he left International Trekkers to work as a free lance leader until 2000. Since then he has continued to work as an independent trek leader as well as working for Explore Worldwide and later with the Imaginative Traveller, both UK based firms, as a trek leader.
The past eighteen years of hard work have helped him develop a good understanding of international trekkers needs. He is able to offer much of his experience and knowledge not only about trekking but about the whole Himalayan region, its traditions, religious life and the respect it deserves. He is a world class educator.

Microphones have undergone a lot of changes over the years. Some designs stayed and others became a part of vintage microphones. Microphone, popularly known as mike or mic, is one of the primary elements in an audio or music system.
The main job of the mic is to convert sound into an electrical signal. It has a large number of applications as in music production system, telephone, hearing aid, motion picture production, etc.
Earlier, microphones were known as transmitters. In 1978, Thomas Alva Edison made the first commercial microphone. It was a type of carbon microphone. Later, in Bell Laboratories in 1962, a new type of capacitor microphone was invented.
There were a number of microphones which have made their marks over the last few decades. Some of the names went on to create history but now they are a part of the vintage microphones.

The History & Development of Vintage Microphones
The early 1930s saw the movie industry trying out new technology to record musical scores. However, the range of microphones offered was low. In came the MGM Studios, in Culver City, CA, to try out the newly invented cardioid mic made by the Siemens Co, Germany. It was used to make “Naughty Marietta” with the likes of Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy.
Dynamic or condenser microphones were much smaller in size than the Siemens’ version of the cardioid mic. There was a constant effort made to reduce the size of the microphones to facilitate its use.
James Cannon of Cannon Electric Co. in Los Angeles, CA, was told to build up a connector for the mic. His creation was a 6 pin connector which later on became the prototype of P-type connector, which turned out to be an instantaneous success. 3 conductor connector for camera cable was made then which put Cannon plug to history from 1929 onwards.
Mason and Marshall of the Bell Laboratories made a blueprint of a tubular microphone in 1939. The design was such that it utilized a single element and acoustical tubes of different sizes. It helped in the pickup of directional music. The tubular design was the forerunner of the modern day mics.
Electret condenser microphone is a part of the vintage microphones as it has a history dating back to 1928. It used polarized wax plates. Bogen offered this type commercially under the name Voltage Velotron. The WWII saw the development of wax electret mikes. The Japanese used it in their field devices. However, they did not become very popular due to their instability.
In 1962-1965 the electret mics got their diaphragm made of a metalized thin foil of mylar or teflon. Sony, in 1968, created the then finest electret condenser microphone. That too has now moved into vintage microphones.

Can someone please explain the reason why so many hot tub cover manufacturers plaster their logos all over the covers they sell? Do they think that’s what their customers want in their backyards? Let’s consider the options:
- Huge corporate logo amongst the flowers and patio stones.
- A blank field of nothingness (once we remove the logo, of course).
- Something else.
But what else? Well, with a blank canvas just sitting there waiting for us to imprint on it our imaginations, just about anything goes. Here are a few possible fantasy hot tub cover ideas.
A polar bear. This is the ideal design for Canada, in fact. The polar bear is a symbol of strength, able to rip human flesh from the bone in just a few seconds flat, one of the strongest animals in the world.
